Austin is full of weird, unique, and original – our housing is no exception! This weekend was host of the 2nd Annual Weird Homes Tour.
The Queen of the Weird parks her car in front of her apartment (no photos were allowed inside). Notice the cell phone on the dashboard of her car!
The Earthbag House was built entirely of dirt – formed into tube shaped bags and wound into circles much like a bee hive and then covered on the outside with plaster. The floor is dirt treated with linseed oil. This house has no doors except for the front door.
Some folks live in dumpsters . . . in the name of environmental education. A professor at Hutson-Tillotson University in Central Austin lives in the 185 sq ft dumpster complete with mailbox, AC, and twin bed and bedside table.
Sharon’s House is FULL top to bottom. She collects and makes art and displays it throughout her house.
The ‘Under The Sea’ House was filled with sea inspired art and open windows to view the sea art in the back yard.
This Midevial Manor was full of surprises including bats in the belfry, a shark over the dining room table, and one secret room! Its 5 stories of mystery and intrigue at every turn. Built totally green and . . . weird.
The Music House had more than just music – it had an original working Atari. Yes, we played Pac-Man! They also had an amazing collection of music, books about music, and posters on every wall.
Freeman House – true artists. This home was filled with original pieces from top to bottom.
Florence’s Comfort House started as an effort to have the neighborhood kids clean up the trash (all of which she found beauty in and began to collect). We were told she started to feed the kids who helped clean up and its become a tradition now to feed the kids in the neighborhood – she offered us spaghetti and salad.
