What do you get when you clean 115 year old dirt from original door hardware . . . Copper!
We took off all the original hardware to clean it and prepare the doors for restoration. We truly thought we had tarnished brass or iron hardware, but are super pleased to have found original copper on all but 2 of the 26 doors. Those 2 door plates must have been replaced in the 1930’s as they have a very typical art deco design.
The process of removing tarnish and dirt from these door plates is tough. Each one has to be done by had. We have 25-30 more days in this flip so we will need to clean a few a day to keep on track!
If anyone has experience with restoring copper – please share your knowledge!
